A Calm First Dentist for Your Kids
Yes, we care for children at D Street Dental Group in San Rafael. We are a family practice, so your child can see the same dentist you do, in a place that already feels familiar. The goal of an early visit is simple: keep those teeth healthy and help your child feel comfortable in the chair, so the dentist never becomes something to dread.
Baby teeth matter more than people think. They hold space for the adult teeth coming in behind them, they shape how kids speak and chew, and the habits your child builds now tend to stick for life. A healthy mouth is part of a healthy body, and getting kids used to good care early is one of the simplest long-term investments you can make in their health.
What We Do for Kids
- Gentle checkups, cleanings, and fluoride to keep cavities away
- Sealants and cavity care when a tooth actually needs them
- Watching how the adult teeth come in, and flagging bite or spacing issues early
- Simple, honest explanations that inform your child instead of scaring them
- A patient, unhurried pace, especially for a first visit or an anxious kid
We do not overtreat and we do not upsell. If your child's teeth are healthy, we will tell you that and send you home.
What a Kid's Visit Looks Like
- A friendly hello We let your child settle in and get comfortable first. Nothing is rushed, and a parent stays right there.
- A gentle checkup & cleaning We count and clean the teeth, apply fluoride, and look for anything that needs attention.
- Show and tell We explain what we see in kid-friendly words, and loop you in so you know exactly where things stand.
- A plan, only if needed If something needs doing, we walk you through it honestly. If not, you are on your way.
Why D Street Dental Group
Dr. Steve Truman
Dr. Steve earned his DDS from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry and served as a clinical instructor training first-year dental students. He is a parent himself, so he knows what a squirmy, nervous kid looks like and how to meet them where they are. He treats every child the way he would want his own treated: patiently, honestly, and without a single scare tactic.

Children's Dentistry Questions
When should my child first see a dentist?
A good rule of thumb is around your child's first birthday, or whenever the first tooth shows up. Early visits are short and easy, and they matter mostly for building comfort, so the dentist becomes a normal, friendly part of life instead of something to fear later.
My child is nervous about the dentist. How do you handle that?
We slow down and let them warm up. Nothing is rushed, we explain each thing in words a kid understands before we do it, and a parent stays right there. When children know what is coming and feel in control, most of the fear drops away. Tell us when you call and we will plan the visit around your child.
Can my kids and I see the same dentist?
Yes. D Street Dental Group is a family practice, so your child sees the same dentist you do, in a place that already feels familiar. Booking the family together keeps visits simple and helps kids feel at ease watching a parent go first.
How much does a children's dental visit cost in San Rafael?
We give you a clear, itemized estimate, and a routine checkup, cleaning, and fluoride is straightforward. Our in-house children's membership covers your child's preventive visits and takes 20% off restorative & major work, with flexible in-office payment plans available. Call (415) 453-0744 to get set up.
Are dental X-rays safe for children?
Yes. Our digital X-rays use a very low dose of radiation, and we only take the ones your child actually needs to catch problems we cannot see by eye. We are careful and conservative about this, the same way we would be with our own kids.
